A bride planning a small, adults-only wedding has been left stunned after her future mother-in-law threatened not to attend unless her two-year-old granddaughter was invited.
The bride and original poster (OP), user aluna303, shared her story on Reddit, explaining that she and her fiancé chose to limit their wedding to about 50 guests and exclude children entirely.
The decision, she said, was meant to create a relaxed atmosphere and avoid distractions during the celebration.
"My fiance and I are having a small wedding compared to our siblings," she noted, adding that they were skipping traditional roles like flower girls and ring bearers. "We want this to be intimate and about us."
The couple both originally agreed on the child-free rule—until her fiancé spoke with his mother.
...According to the post, the OP's future mother-in-law said she would not attend if her two-year-old granddaughter was excluded from the guest list.
The OP explained that the rule applied to everyone, including several children in her own family: "I do love them, don't get me wrong, but I don't want screaming children ruining what is supposed to be our day."
She also pointed out that the venue’s insurance policy charges more if children are present because the property includes an open lake.
The disagreement did not stop there. The OP said her future sister-in-law, who is married to the groom’s brother and currently pregnant, also suggested she might skip the wedding.
According to the post, the sister-in-law joked she would not attend because she wanted to "look good."
Reddit users overwhelmingly backed the OP, urging her to stick with her decision and accept that some guests may decline the invitation.
"You can't control how other people react to your choices," one pointed out. "You've made your decision, now just ignore the critics."
Another added, "You’re allowed a child-free wedding, she’s allowed to not go. You can’t control how other people feel about your choices, even if it seems silly to you."
'Something different'
The OP later shared an update explaining that she spoke with her fiancé and the two reaffirmed their plan to keep the event adults-only.
She said the conversation also revealed conflicting accounts about what the groom’s mother had told each of them.
"MIL told me and my mom something different from what she told him," the OP wrote, saying her fiancé claimed his mother had told him the rule was fine.
Child-Free Weddings
Small weddings and child-free ceremonies have become increasingly common as couples try to control costs and create a specific atmosphere for their celebrations.
Newsweek previously reported that one groom turned to Reddit after his sister assumed her toddlers would still be welcome at his adults-only ceremony.
The groom wrote that his fiancée was "adamant about not having kids at the wedding (it's a very HARD no)."
Wedding planning advice cited in another Newsweek article suggests couples should stand by their decisions even if relatives object.
Guidance from The Knot states, "Just remember, like with other decisions you're making, this is your wedding day and you and your partner get to decide who's invited to the wedding—period."
