Netflix is adding a new wrinkle to its reality dating lineup with Age of Attraction, a series that asks singles to form relationships without knowing one key detail: each other’s age.

In the experiment, couples can decide to commit before they learn how many years apart they are—a reveal meant to test whether chemistry and compatibility can survive a potentially uncomfortable number.

Hosts Nick Viall and Natalie Joy, a married couple with their own high-profile age gap, guide the cast through the process.

...

Netflix has promoted the inaugural season as a mix of bold personalities and unconventional résumés.

The cast includes Andrew, a bar owner who frames his search like a romantic comedy—“I’m Jude Law in The Holiday, and I want my fairy-tale ending,” Andrew says in the cast descriptions.

Another contestant, Brian, compares relationships to dining: “Do you want a fast-food McDonald’s experience or a Michelin star–rated meal?” he says.

Age of Attraction premieres March 11, with episodes rolling out weekly, according to Netflix’s Tudum site.

'Hate them'

However, the “don’t ask my age” rule—paired with hosts who have faced scrutiny over their own age-gap relationship—has already prompted online pushback from some viewers, including a pocket of fans discussing the show on Reddit.

One user declared, “I won’t watch because of the hosts. I hate them as podcasters, and they will be sooooo dramatic on TV.”

Another remarked, “It’s weird that Nick [Viall] is not in the trailer at all.”

A third commenter questioned how the format could play out: “I wonder who all the older men will just happen to find themselves attracted to?! I can’t believe the female host is the younger one?! It’s almost as if…”

The skepticism around who the show benefits taps into a long-running debate about dating norms—especially when age gaps collide with real-world attraction patterns.

A widely circulated analysis tied to OkCupid data, cited in Business Insider’s coverage of Christian Rudder’s book Dataclysm, argued that men “at every age are consistently most attracted to women in their early 20s,” even if messaging behavior trends closer to their own age range.

The hosts’ public image has also become part of the conversation.

Beyond their 18-year age gap, a Yahoo Entertainment report described renewed criticism of The Viall Files after an interview that drew backlash for a question about a guest’s family tragedy, adding to broader complaints from some listeners about tone and empathy on the podcast that have already been circulating.

It seems this criticism has made the duo an unwanted addition to Netflix’s newest reality dating show.

For Netflix, the timing is deliberate: Age of Attraction arrives during a packed March slate that includes multiple reality releases and returning franchises.

Luckily for fans and skeptics alike, March 11 may finally reveal whether age actually is just a number.
