If there is one thing the residents of Coronation Street would be good to avoid, it’s getting on the wrong side of newcomer Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn).

The latest in a long line of matriarchs to stand behind the signature Newton and Ridley pumps, Maggie is right at home in her role, living up to the icons that came before her in barking orders, holding court and taking absolutely no nonsense from the staff – or the punters!

Her demeanour alone is reason enough not cross Maggie, who watches over her loved ones – and the locals – with an iron fist. However, getting barred and a few camp nasty jibes would be the least of anyone’s worries as Maggie is also a murderer.

A special flashback episode at Christmas confirmed such a thing, revealing how she pushed husband Alan down the stairs during a blazing row about her affair, accusing her of controlling and manipulative behaviour.

This side of Maggie was on display once more when she reiterated to daughter-in-law Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) that it wouldn’t be wise to cross her, given that she would do anything for her family – including ‘laying down her life’.

And Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) could be next in line to face the wrath of the cold-blooded killer after he struck up a friendship with Rovers landlord Ben (Aaron McCusker).

Steve, as viewers know, is best mates with Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) but the two’s relationship hit the rocks earlier this week when cab driver Steve hit it off with the new Rovers chief – discussing rugby, much to football fanatic Tim’s dismay.

With Tim under the weather in Friday’s (February 20) edition of the ITV soap, Steve once again frequented the Rovers for a game of darts and a chinwag with new bestie Ben.

Their budding bromance, however, seemed to antagonise Maggie as she glared at the two throughout the evening. Having had enough of their fun, she swiftly tried to break up the party, urging Steve to go home.

When Steve failed to do so and ordered another pint, Maggie in her capacity as landlady was forced to comply – but not before issuing another look of disdain towards the two.

But just why has she taken umbrage with Steve? Is she perhaps worried that he’ll be a bad influence on Ben, who recently had a health scare? Is she worried that, in addition to Eva, she will also have to vie for her son’s attention as well?

Whatever the reason is, it’s safe to assume that Steve should keep one eye open because when Maggie has her sights on getting someone out of the picture, they’re gone before they even have a chance to say: ‘Pint of bitter please, love.’
