Arsenal’s pursuit of silverware on four fronts continues this afternoon against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

A place in the fifth round of the competition is up for grabs with 2013 champions the Latics out to spring a huge surprise.

The Gunners breezed passed Portsmouth in the third round of the competition and amid a busy fixture schedule with Wolves and Tottenham to follow next week, they will hope to take care of business in comfortable fashion this afternoon.

Mikel Arteta has a couple of injuries to contend with but after a setback in the league midweek, a response will be expected today.

Metro’s LIVE matchday blog will bring you all the build-up, confirmed team news and starting XIs, goal updates and minute-by-minute coverage.

27 min | FOUR for Arsenal and Arteta’s men are well and truly cruising.

A ridiculously high line from Wigan leaves Jesus all on his own through the middle.

It’s a lovely through ball from Norgaard and an even better finish from Jesus, who calmly dinks the ball over Tickle in the Wigan goal.

There are some miserable faces in that away end…

23 min | Oh dear… things are going from bad to worse for the Latics and it’s a moment to forget for Hunt.

The Wigan defender inadvertently heads the ball into his own net after some fine play from Saka on the right flank, and the Gunners have the bit between their teeth.

18 min | It’s another superb piece of play from Eze, who has his second assist of the game inside just 18 minutes.

He finds Martinelli with a brilliant pass and the Brazilian cooly slides the ball past Tickle from a tight ankle to double Arsenal’s advantage.

It’s Martinelli’s fourth goal in the competition after his hat-trick heroics against Portsmouth previously.

11 min | The hosts are in front and it’s Madueke who has broken the deadlock following an exquisite through ball from Eze.

Madueke still had a lot to do… but it’s such a calm and composed finish from the England winger.

It could be a long afternoon for the visitors now…

Mikel Arteta says today’s tie represents a ‘new challenge’ for Eberechi Eze after the midfielder was hauled off at half-time in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Thursday night.

Asked if Eze has a ‘big opportunity’ to put his hand up for selection against Wigan, Arteta told TNT Sports: ’Yeah, to all of them. It’s not about the individuals, it’s about every player.

‘He’s going to have better and worse games and today’s a new challenge.

‘We have to be very ready against this Wigan side.’

Martin Keown is expecting a comfortable victory for Arsenal over the 2013 FA Cup winners today.

‘I’ve had a look at Wigan and, in recent performances, they’ve lost six of their last eight games,’ the ex-Arsenal and England defender said on TNT Sports ahead of kick-off.

‘They’re shipping goals for fun, they haven’t got a manager after sacking Ryan Lowe. What they have got is 5,000 supporters that have turned up here today.

‘It’s memory lane. Many of those Wigan fans are old enough to remember winning this in 2013 and they were in the Premier League for many years.

‘Arsenal should really wipe the floor with Wigan but we know the FA Cup can spring surprises. This would be up there with one of the biggest.’

This is the first meeting between Arsenal and Wigan since their FA Cup semi-final encounter in 2014, when the Gunners prevailed via a penalty shootout.

A year on from Wigan’s miraculous FA Cup triumph, Lucasz Fabianski was the hero for Arsenal, denying both Gary Caldwell and Jack Collinson from 12 yards.

Mikel Arteta (remember him?), Kim Kallstrom, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla were all successful from the spot as the north Londoners advanced through 13 years ago.

They would go on to beat Hull City in the final that year.

Wigan find themselves in a worrying position In League One after a wretched start to the campaign – but could they cause a huge cup upset against the Premier League leaders this afternoon?

After all, the Gunners haven’t managed a win at home in the FA Cup since their 2-0 victory over Newcastle way back in January 2021.

The Latics, meanwhile, have won their last six away matches in the competition, conceding just one goal in this impressive run.

They couldn’t… could they?
