Previous Page Next PageFebruary might well be the month of love, but not everybody enjoys cuddling up on the sofa for yet another cheesy rom-com.
If you’ve had enough romance, BBC iPlayer might just have the perfect anti-Valentine’s antidote, but be warned… you might have trouble sleeping tonight.
Originally adapted from their own long-running stage play, Ghost Stories is a 2017 British supernatural thriller written and directed by Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson.
Centering on Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman), a devoted skeptic who has built his career on exposing fraudulent psychics and debunking claims of the paranormal, the professor is sent a mysterious invitation to investigate three unsolved cases of alleged hauntings.
After being drawn into a series of encounters that begin to challenge his worldview, the film pays homage to classic British horror.
Reacting to the film on IMDb, diffguy said the film was an ‘extremely interesting series of ghostly investigations that force a haughty paranormal skeptic to question his life’s work’.

However, in the end despite ‘loving it’, the ‘last 15 minutes’ let everything down and ‘severely weakened’ the film.
Simon similarly praised some ‘good jump scares and moments’, but said in the end it was ‘ultimately disappointing’.
Calling the overall product ‘chilling’, Hugh similarly said: ‘Ghost Stories is highly effective, lingering on in the memory the way all good cerebrally-challenging psychological horrors should.’
Meanwhile, Jon added: ‘Great acting, well shot and directed, with a very British sense of humour sprinkled throughout.
‘Do not read too much about this movie, just go and experience it, I think you will find it scary, interesting and most of all worth your time.’
The three cases that Goodman is drawn to includes a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) in an abandoned asylum, a teenage boy (Alex Lawther) describing a disturbing incident in the woods and a wealthy businessman (Martin Freeman) who shares a chilling story about his home.

An official synopsis reads: ‘Professor Philip Goodman, famous for debunking hoaxes and ghost sightings, is given a dossier of three terrifying, unsolvable cases by his hero and role model Charles Cameron, who has been missing, presumed dead, for years.

Earlier this week, another ‘twisted’ horror film starring an Oscar nominee was made available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Originally released in 2022 and already streaming on Amazon Prime, Bones and All follows a young woman who embarks on a journey across America after developing a fascination with cannibalism.
Along the way, Maren (Taylor Russell) meets free-spirited Lee, played by three-time Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet.
