UConn took the lead for good early in the second half and held off visiting Providence for an 87-81 victory on Tuesday night. Tarris Reed Jr. contributed 19 points and four blocked shots while Solo Ball scored 17 points and Silas Demary Jr. added 15. Eric Reibe came off the bench for 14 points, and fellow reserve Malachi Smith went for 12 points and seven assists while Alex Karaban shook off a poor shooting night with nine rebounds and seven assists.
A disastrous first half doomed Creighton on Tuesday night in an 86-62 blowout loss at Marquette. The Bluejays shot just 30.3% in the opening 20 minutes and trailed by 29 at the break. Austin Swartz finished with 17 points and six assists in the loss, while reserve Blake Harper tossed in 15 points and Jasen Green grabbed six rebounds.
The Bluejays took two of three meetings from the Huskies last season and lead the all-time series 9-3. Ball averages 14.8 points for UConn, with Reed putting up 14.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, and Demary posting 10.4 points and a Big East-leading 6.1 assists a night. Josh Dix’s average of 12.3 points leads Creighton, while Swartz scores 11.9 points per game and Green gets 10.7 points and 5.1 boards per outing.
