If you’re in on a Saturday night and fancy a joyful distraction from your week, turning on ITV to watch The Masked Singer UK is honestly one of the best decisions you can make.

It’s weird, it’s wonderful, it’s a brightly-coloured spectacle, and it’s utterly infectious. It might be a singing competition, but the aim of the show isn’t to ensure the best singer wins – it’s to entertain audiences in the studio and at home, and it certainly does.

One of the highlights of the series is undoubtedly the incredible costumes created to conceal the identities of the celebrities hiking within them. This year, the increasingly eccentric characters include the likes of Conkers, Arctic Fox and Monkey Business.

As per annual tradition, Metro recently spoke to The Masked Singer UK’s costume designer Tim Simpson, the creative director of Plunge Creations, who revealed that one individual who viewers should pay especially close attention to for clues is Can of Worms.

The unique character looks exactly as the name suggests – a can, with the warning ‘do not open’ embossed on the front, and worms with animated faces spilling out of the top and bottom.

Can of Worms performed in the first week of the competition, singing Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast, and they’re due to perform for the second time tonight.

Tim explained that in the base design for the costume, there aren’t any clues to the famous person underneath the mask.

However, he left some areas on the costume for others to add clues… so that could be a key place for viewers to look for secret signs pointing to their identity.

‘I left some spaces for them to add some clue details. I’m not even sure if they did. I think I’m going to have to watch it and find out,’ he told us.

‘There are two panels on the side of the can, which are spaces where they can add some clues, should they want to. I think that’s the place to look out for. Just above the ingredients and above the barcode are the two spaces where you can possibly look out for a clue.’

We’ll have our magnifying glasses at the ready ahead of tonight’s show!

Aside from secret clues, Tim also added extra details to Can of Worms’ costume for his own personal enjoyment, which fans might never get to see on TV.

‘I had a lovely time doing the graphic design work on the can, which you don’t even see because, of course, it’s never filmed from behind,’ he outlined.

‘There’s a whole spiel on the back of the can about how at Early Bird HQ, they get up each morning to collect only the finest, plumpest worms. It goes on and on and on. There’s this blurb on the back, and there’s the ingredients list, there’s an allergy list, there’s everything.

‘There’s all that info tucked into the back of it, which no one’s ever going to see, but I know it’s there. It’s my stupid collection of jokes.’

It’s those little details, even ones that might not be visible in the final cut of the programme, that make us marvel at the sensational and imaginative costumes every year.
