Tottenham have won the race to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, with Aston Villa losing out on the midfielder, according to reports.

The 25-year-old moved to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2024, with Atletico paying Chelsea around £34m for his services.

He signed a five-year contract and made 50 appearances in all competitions in his first season in Spain.

The England international has remained a regular face in the first team this campaign, making 27 appearances, but has not been holding down a place in the starting XI under Diego Simeone.

There has been interest in bringing him back to the Premier League since he left and both Villa and Spurs were looking into a deal this month.

The Athletic report that Tottenham are closing in on signing Gallagher, seemingly winning the battle for him thanks to a €40million (£34.7m) bid.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa were trying to secure a loan move with an option to buy in the summer.

However, the Athletic’s report states that no agreements were reached with Villa and Gallagher is keen on a return to London with Spurs.

With 22 caps to his name already, Gallagher is hoping to force his way back into the England team in time for the World Cup this summer.

Tottenham are in need of midfield recruits after a string of injuries in that areas of the pitch.

James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski are all dealing with long-term injuries, while Lucas Bergvall is also out.

Thomas Frank has also been without Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma of late as they are playing at AFCON.
